Amami no Mori (奄美の杜)

$150.00

One of the few black sugar shochus available in HK right now, it’s from Machida Shuzo in Amami (makers of the famous Sato no Akebono) using rice koji and vacuum distillation. It’s candied sweet on the nose, and with gentle caramel sweetness on the palate. It’s as light-bodied as shochu gets, and you might be surprised at its delicacy. Best served with soda or with water on hot days for something refreshing – it’s fine with ice, but you’ll obliterate its sugary notes.

JC: As we don’t get a lot of kokuto in HK, I drink Amami no Mori relatively often… it’s great with soda and passable with ice. It’s also affordable and easily available at City Super. Given how hot HK is, any drink that works with ice is a godsend, and given how a lot “better” shochu are horrible cold, this always has a spot in your alcohol cabinet. If you’re giving it to someone to sample though, make sure it’s neat or just with water; you just lose so much when it’s cold. 8.5/10
